Tokico Struts and STi springs

Sometime in January my rear driver side strut started leaking. After quite a bit of deliberation I decided to get some STi springs with Tokico D-Spec struts.

Timing Belt

About three weeks ago my heater started blowing cold air when the car was idling. Several forums said this could be due to low coolant and when I checked the coolant level I found that it was a little low. On my last subaru this happened when my water pump started going out so I decided to change both the belt and the water pump.

New headlight

Mileage: 138,400

Cost: $13.99

Next time one goes out I'll replace them both.

Spark Plug Change

Miles: 137525

Price: $31

I (finally) changed the spark plugs last week. All told it took me about 3.5 hours. When I started I realized how rusted out my engine bay has become. The first thing you have to do is remove the tank for the wipers and the two bolts almost broke when I took them off...

The contraption the holds the battery on I really did have to bend to get off. I'll have replace that soon. The posts on the battery were really moldy, I cleaned them off which was nice. Here they are before...


The reason is took so long is the position of the spark plugs. After removig the coil packs and exposing the spark plugs it is really hard to get to them. You never actually see them...



Here are two of them of the new ones and two of the old ones...


The old ones had been in their for 7.5 years and 137,525 miles.

Driverside Mirror

I fixed the drivers side mirror today. It was broken at some point while parked near Megan's house in Syracuse. This was probably three years ago. It would not stay in place for very long and would vibrate quite a bit. The dealership quoted me $450 to have them fix it and since it was still kind of useful I didn't think it was worth it.

It took about an hour to fix. The website below helped me figure out how to get the door panel off. Next time I need to be very careful using a screwdriver on interior plastic components as I made a few minor scratches.

About Wheels and Tires

One of the upgrades that I'm thinking about for the future is new wheels and tires. I'm particularly excited about this upgrade because new wheels can really change the way your car works and looks. It is by far the most important single upgrade you can make. It affects handleing and performance as well as cosmetics.

Weight: Wheel weight is extrememly important for both handling and performance. See also unsprung weight.

Size: Since the size of the wheel affects the weight it is important but it also affects the engine speed and handling of the car. A wheel is basically a gear for your car.

Tires: Since tires don't last forever it's important to consider price when determining what size tire, and therefore wheel, to purchase. For example 225/50R16 are $160 each and have a wheel diamter of 24.86 inches. A 225/45R17 are $176 each and have diameter of 24.92 inches. Also, a 225/35R18 are $218 each and have a diameter of 24.2. Also, the bigger tires weigh more and bigger wheels weigh more. The question is because the bigger tires have a lower profile do they handle better?
